Saying hello

How to start a conversation at a bar or event

The first line is usually the hardest part of meeting someone. You don't need a clever opener — start with the place you're both in. Limere can also show you first whether they're open to meeting someone new.

Three ways to make the first line easier

Start with what's around you

You're in the same place, and that's the best topic there is. The music, the drinks, the speaker on stage — one casual question gets you talking.

Ask a question that's easy to answer

“What brought you here tonight?” is much easier to pick up than “How are you?” They don't have to think, and they already have something to say.

Give them an easy way out

After a few lines, say “I'm going to grab a drink.” If they want to keep talking they'll come along, and if not, nobody feels awkward.

It's easier when you know they want to meet you too

What stops most people is not knowing whether the other person wants to be interrupted. Open Limere and you can see who else there is open to meeting someone new. You pick who you'd like to meet, and you only find out about each other if it's mutual. See how Limere works, read how to find someone you saw at an event if you missed your moment, or pick one of the upcoming events.

Starting a conversation: questions

What should I say first?

Talk about what's right in front of you, like “I love this song — do you know who it is?” or “What brought you to this one?” Simple, about the place, and easy to answer beats any opener you prepared.

How can I tell if they want to talk?

Notice whether they look back, give a little more than a one-word answer, and turn towards you. If the answers stay short or they keep checking their phone, wrap up politely. On Limere, you can see who else there is open to meeting someone new, and you only find out about each other if it's mutual.

How do I start if I go to an event alone?

Arrive early, when it's quieter and easiest to say hello. Stand at the bar or where people order — the person next to you is often on their own too. You can also chat with the host or staff, who'll often introduce you to someone.

How do I end the conversation naturally?

Just say it: “It was great to meet you, I'm going to find my friends.” If you'd like to stay in touch, ask whether they'd like to swap contacts. If they say yes, great; if not, leave it there.

What if they're cold?

It happens. They might be busy, tired or just want some time alone, and it isn't about you. Smile, say “I'll let you get back to it,” and find the next conversation. Every hello is practice, and it gets easier.
